Deputy Minister of National Defence (MND), Park Young-ok, revealed to a Grand National Party (GNP) committee Wednesday that an estimated 19,000 POWs were not returned at the end of the Korean War, of which 343 were confirmed to be still alive. Of these, 58 had relatives in South Korea. Prior to this 312 were supposed to be still living in North Korea. Park said that he will discuss with related ministries the inclusion of the relatives of the 58 in the displaced family exchange visits scheduled for August 15.
Committee members called on the government to give priority to the POWs and Park promised to raise the issue at future meetings. The GNP said the return of the POWs should be linked to the return of North Korean agents who have served long term prison sentences in the South.
